Living Sea Sculpture started in 2010 with a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign. We aimed to create and install an electrolytic, mineral accretion artificial reef in Cancún, Mexico, for the underwater museum, MUSA. Through the phases of this coral restoration project, ongoing as a living +livestreaming memorial to Zoe Anderson in Cozumel, Mexico, we have evolved.
Now, 15 years later, we focus on transdisciplinary, holistic approaches to create a world for coral reefs to flourish.
Living Sea Sculpture recognizes that coral reefs ARE the sculptors of the sea. Our team works to support their living artistry and survival with unique, aesthetic and functional habitats.
We are developing substrate materials for coral cultivation that aim to be biocompatible and reduce carbon emissions in production.
Hands-on restoration practices integrating innovative Research & Development to mitigate climate change are carried out with leading scientific researchers to regenerate biodiverse reef ecosystems.
Reefs provide irreplaceable value locally, regionally, and internationally. We want to be a part of the solution and hope you will be too!
5 years ago! Plum was there to give his blessing to my previous 5 years of navigating to finally get permits and connect with the right people and location to install Zoe - A Living Sea Sculpture, this commemorative coral refuge honoring Zoe Anderson.
So many hundreds, thousands of people (and animals) along the way contributing time, money, skills, friendship supporting the transition from a spindly steel armature to a living, breathing memorial reef honoring cycles of life, death, and hope. Thank you to ALL who are woven into this ongoing journey! We couldn't be here without you!
The 1st 5 years in the sea have been focused on maintenance and seeding corals, observing the beginning of micro-ecosystem cultivation with wonderful, passionate divers. May the next 5 years expand to bring in much more biological and materials research (already beginning in 2020) so this vital niña continues to evolve as a healing beacon of adaptive habitat restoration and coral propagation through cross-disciplinary dedication + love.
I have shared this progress video before, yet when watched in juxtaposition with the photo above of Zoepre-ocean, it really sinks in the way life happens.
Myself, I have never wanted to have biological children, yet this project feels like a "biological" child collaboration with the sea and all the incredible community emerging from its being. I'm so grateful to participate in the joys and challenges, and bare witness to the unfolding of the electrolytic, immersive experience.
I can't get enough of all the organisms, the exuberant volunteers and team members, and the flashes of future inspiration and vision that show up because of THIS.
Special thanks and acknowledgement to the Zoe Anderson Memorial Fund and all of you supportive members.
With love,
Colleen
